At Marienhospital Gelsenkirchen, the 560-bed teaching facility of the University of Duisburg-Essen’s medical faculty, cleaning standards are high – and this is not only due to the many hygiene regulations. The service provider relies on treated mop covers for clean floors.The Stölting Service Group has been maintaining the hospitals of St. Augustine in Gelsenkirchen since October 2014. The Marienhospital in Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf is one of them. About 120 employees of the service provider work there, seven days a week. They have a lot to do. “We are not just cleaners, we’re really hygiene professionals,” says Halisa Demir, Stölting’s facility manager for St. Augustine in Gelsenkirchen. And professional support also comes from the cleaning product and system used on-site. Ecolab’s treated mop solution doesn’t just improve cleaning efficiency and conserve resources. Treated mops prevent cross contaminationThe microfiber covers are soaked with detergents and disinfectants during the machine washing, and this results in significant savings on the detergent front. The mops can be stored for up to 72 hours afterwards. Manual pre-soaking is also possible if the washing machines are overloaded or the mops are used for sensitive areas, like operating rooms. Each cleaner requires 50 covers per station, one per room. The clever layout of the system trolley, which has large mop boxes and is specially designed for the pre-soaked mop system, provides the necessary storage space for all the covers needed for one station. 3,000 mops are used at the Marienhospital every day. “The biggest advantage is without a doubt the prevention of cross contamination,” explains Kai Weber, who heads hospital cleaning at the Stölting group. Fresh covers are used for each room in the hospital. Used covers go directly in the detachable disposal unit on the cleaning trolley. “That is particularly important for the sensitive zones, like sanitary areas and the kitchen. It enables us to achieve the highest possible standard of cleaning and hygiene,” Weber emphasizes. Detergents and disinfectants are fed in during the wash cycle in the machine using a liquid batching system provided by Ecolab. Precise dosing also contributes to the safety of the cleaning staff because the mop treatment process eliminates the need to handle cleaning agents. Still, hospital cleaning is always a challenge. “The regulations and instructions for maintaining hygiene at the required level can be quite complex and there is the fear of doing something wrong. In addition, inspections by senior hospital staff are frequent,” says Halisa Demir, the facility manager. This all adds up to extra pressure the cleaning staff must cope with time and again. Moreover, they are also concerned about the risk of infectious diseases, which are more easily transmitted in a hospital than in other places. However, the results are very satisfactory, explains Halisa Demir, adding: “We can all be very proud of the excellent job we’re doing here in making sure that cleaning is carried out as expected.“ Besides the sizeable Marienhospital, Stölting also looks after cleaning and hygiene at the smaller Sankt-Marienhospital in Gelsenkirchen-Buer, which has 380 beds.
